Native Plant Sales in Lake County

It’s spring planting season. One of the easiest and economical ways to fill your garden is through local plant sales. We filled in an entire side of our driveway with day lilies that we got for a great deal at a garden club sale. These sales usually support local green initiatives as well which means you are getting a beautiful garden and helping a great cause.

Here are the spring sales we have on our radar. As with most sales be sure to check on all information and come prepared many will not take credit, cash is best.

9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Saturday April 26 Bare Root Apple Tree Sale
Royal Oak Farm Orchard {15908 Hebron Rd, Harvard}
The Farm will have Honeycrisp, Johnathon, Snwo Sweet, Liberty, Zestar, Pristine, Cortland, Blondee, Gala, Fuji and McIntosh, there will also have three varieties of Flamin’ Fury Peach trees. Apple and Peach Trees are $24.95 except for Honeycrisp which is $29.95. Apple trees can be ordered in advance of pick up at the Royal Oak Farm website.

9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 3 and 4 18th Annual Native Plant Sale Citizens for Conservation Headquarters {459 West highway 22, Lake Barrington}
A huge selection of robust, hardy native plants will be available for purchase and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to answer questions. For more information contact the CFC at (847) 382-7283.

8:30- 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 10 The Gardeners of Central Lake C0unty Plant Sale Crawford Warming House {817 W. Lake St., Libertyville}
Offering beautiful, healthy, local plants for sun or shade at a great price. Choose from a variety of mature perennials, native plants, herbs, vegetables, ground-covers and more dug from member’ local gardens. Come early for best selections. Cash or check, rain or shine. 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday May 10 and 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Sunday May 11 Native Plant Sale, Independence Grove {16400 W. Buckley Rd., Libertyville}

9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Saturday May 10 9th Annual Arbor Day Tree & Shrub Sale Acres Group parking lot {610 W. Liberty Street, Wauconda}
This event will offer a wide variety of trees, shrubs and ornamental plants for sale at or below retail prices. Contact the Acres Group at (847) 536-5580 for more information.

9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Saturday May 10 - Millburn School & Community Garden 2nd Annual Plant Sale Millburn School {18550 Millburn Rd., Wadsworth}
Choose from a variety of Organic vegetables, herb and flower seedlings. All plants are grown at Tempel Farms Organic with the help of students from Millburn Elementary and all proceeds will benefit education in the Millburn School & Community Garden. Pre-orders due by Friday May 2. Some plant types will be limited and will only be available while supplies last. Most varieties will be seedling size, potted and ready for planting outside. 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Monday - Saturday May 16-31 Conserve Lake County Native Plant Sale Conserve Lake County Offices {Almond Marsh, 32492 N. Almond Road, Grayslake}
Over 150 species of perennials, grasses, ferns, shrubs and trees will be available, along with expert guidance form staff and a small selection of related products including high-quality compost. Online ordering available before May 1. Call (847) 548-5989 for more information.

10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Saturday May 17 Liberty Foundation Organic Plant Sale Prairie Crossing Learning Farm {32400 N Harris Rd., Grayslake}
Purchase organic plants and other farm products as well as meet the Prairie Crossing Farmers. You can find a list of seedlings available on the Liberty Prairie Foundation .Plants will be sold on a first come first serve basis so come early for the best selection. 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday May 17 and 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Sunday May 18 Garden Club Plant Sale, Reed-Turner Woodland Nature Center {3849 Old McHenry Rd, Long Grove}
Held by the Long Grove-Kildeer Garden Club the sale will include heirloom tomatoes, herbs and perennials direct from members’ gardens. Plants are offered on a first come first serve basis and the quality and prices are remarkable. The Plant sale will also have botanical art on display. For more information call (847) 6334-2374

1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Saturday May 17 14th Annual Plant Swap Zion-Benton Public Library {2400 Gabriel Ave,Zion}
Got a plant to swap? Come and see what you may enjoy from another person’s garden? All plants should be potted and labeled. The event will include a kid’s craft, refreshments, and prizes. Presented by the Illinois Dunesland Garden Club. Contact the library at (847) 872-4680 for more information.

 

After you’re done planting all your finds and more don’t toss out those plastic garden pots, containers and polystyrene cellpacks - recycle them!

Plant Container Recycling - Saturday June 7 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe - Parking Lot 4

Bring in your plastic garden posts, cellpacks, trays and plant labels to the garden for recycling. Recyclables accepted are Number 2, 4, 5, and 6 materials. Pots will be collected and sorted in Parking lot 4 and part of World Environment Day. Standard parking fees apply. Contact the garden at (847) 835-5440 for more information.
