Key Lime Cove Specials - All of the Fun with None of the Sunscreen
An SPF hasn’t been invented that will keep my pasty Irish skin from reddening in the summer sun. My annual tradition of burning the outline of a short-sleeve V-neck t-shirt into my skin during the first warm spring day means I spend the rest of summer trying to even out some very strange tan lines.
My husband and kids are the same way. We go through bottles of sunscreen every summer in active denial of our Northern European heritage. Of course, we’re willing to put up with a little sunburn and even future skin cancer risk for a little fun in the sun, but sometimes the sun isn’t even the problem. Beach days, while fun to dream about, can be about as (not) fun as Chicago winter when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
That’s why when we discovered indoor waterparks with our children back in 2007, we never looked back. It’s all of the fun with none of the sunscreen. And it’s always guaranteed to be sunny and 84 degrees. At first, our only outlet was the 3-4 hour drive to Wisconsin Dells but now there’s Key Lime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort right here in Lake County.
We’ve been to Key Lime Cove several times, sometimes staying overnight in their cozy tropical inspired rooms, and sometimes just playing for the day (available only during United Way of Lake County Community Days.) It’s a great time for everyone. Key Lime Cove is a kid-friendly hotel with suites in 7 different configurations, so groups can sleep up to 12 people in adjoining rooms. Stepping into a suite at Key Lime Cove is like being transported to Florida, no matter what the weather is outside. Since we have a family of 5, we opt for the Queen Deluxe room with two queen size beds and a sofa sleeper. Another thing I love about Key Lime Cove is that every room comes with a refrigerator. That means we can bring some of our family favorites from home and head off any picky eaters.
Admission to the 65,000 square foot Lost Island Waterpark is included in the room price. My kids (ages 9-15) love rides like the Hurricane Vortex and the Screaming Banshee. But when they were younger, the lazy river and wave pool kept them busy for hours. Wee little ones will enjoy the mini-slides in the Play Pond. Moms and Dads will like the comfy padded loungers and hot tub (no kids allowed!) On our most recent visit, my tween son discovered the Rip Tide Reef Arcade with age-appropriate play zones and family friendly games.
But my absolute favorite thing about Key Lime Cove is that my kids and I feel so safe there. Now that they’re older, I don’t feel the need to follow them up and down the slides all day. The waterpark is a manageable size and never too crowded, and they feel comfortable asking the lifeguards and park monitors for help if they need it.
