Guest librarian, Mitch Berman, is on the move! He now works at the Zion Benton Public Library in Zion, as the Youth Services Programming and Event Librarian. Mitch’s job is to create fun and exciting programs and events for children from the communities of Zion, Beach Park, Wadsworth, and Winthrop Harbor. He also works on the reference desk, connecting children to with great literature!

This month Mitch is going to highlight some of the award books that won at the Youth Media Awards in late February 2018.

Caldecott Winner:

Wolf in the Snow Illustrated and written by Matthew Cordell

Wolf in the Snow Illustrated and written by Matthew Cordell tells the beautiful story of a girl and a wolf, who are both lost in a blizzard. Will they ever find their way home? Beautifully illustrated, this book will captivate young readers until the story culminates in the end.

 

 

 

Newbery Winner:

Hello, Universe written by Erin Entrada Kelly

Hello, Universe written by Erin Entrada Kelly interweaves the story of two boys and two girls and teaches the reader about finding your inner hero. This book will excite the tween audience and get them cheering for the underdogs.

 

 

 

Pura Belpre Winner:

Lucky Broken Girl written by Ruth Behar

Lucky Broken Girl written by Ruth Behar tells the story of Jewish-Cuban immigrant Ruthie, who moves to New York City with her family. When Ruthie gets into a car accident that puts her in a body cast, Ruthie soon understands how fragile life can be. Based on the author’s childhood in New York City in the 1960’s, this book is one not to be-missed.

 

 

 

 

Sibert Informational Winner:

Twelve Days in May: Freedom Ride 1961 written by Larry Bane Brimmer

Twelve Days in May: Freedom Ride 1961 written by Larry Dane Brimmer tells the story about the Freedom Riders who went on to try to desegregate buses in the south. Brimmer relies on rarely seen images to tell this riveting story from 1961!

 

 

 

 

Mildred L. Batchelder Winner:

The Murderer’s Ape written and illustrated by Jakob Wegelius

The Murderer’s Ape is the story about a gorilla named Sally. She moves among humans without speaking and works with the Chief in operating a cargo boat. When the chief murdered, it is up to Sally to clear his name.
